Food. Fun. Adventure. Hawaii is known as paradise for a reason, and O’ahu – the state’s most populated island – is home to a ton of amazing, varied events for you to check out. To get you started, StorQuest has put together a list of six awesome events on the island to attend in 2020.

Kapu’uola Hula Festival

When: April

This outdoor hula festival takes place at the pa hula – or hula mound – at Pu'uokapolei, a historical landmark in Kapolei. Free and open to the public, the event celebrates dance and oral traditions of native Hawaiians through hula and chant. After the performances, make sure to try out the food booths, browse handmade crafts, and maybe even discover some surprising treasures during the silent auction.

The Lei Day Celebration

When: May

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. As its name implies, the holiday is a time for everyone to celebrate lei – an integral part of Hawaiian culture – and the aloha spirit. The Lei Day Celebration is held in Kapiolani Park, the largest and second oldest public park in the state. Visitors can participate in lei-making competitions and enjoy local cuisine, hula, and live music.

Duke Kahanamoku Challenge

When: May

If you’re looking for a bit of friendly competition, the Duke Kahanamoku Challenge is sure to test your physical prowess. Taking place at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, athletes gather round for a day of outrigger canoe, stand-up paddleboard, and kayak racing. There are some land activities to try out as well – you and a group of friends can duke it out in an epic round of Hawaiian tug of war.

Aloha Salads Summer Sprint

When: June

If you’re looking to take a trip to Haleiwa, consider signing up for the Aloha Salads Summer Sprint. The first of the North Shore Swim Series hosted by Surf n Sea, this event pits you against competitors racing 1 mile, swimming from Sunset Beach Park to Ehukai Beach Park. It’s the perfect way to get a head start on summer.

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival

When: October

Taking place across three weekends on multiple islands, the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival features a stacked list of renowned chefs, wine and spirit producers, and culinary tastemakers. This series of events are hosted across hotels and restaurants, providing an optimal chance for you to learn about Hawaii’s cuisine – and, of course, try out delicious food and drinks.

The Honolulu Marathon

When: December

Get your running shoes on. Open to anyone who pays the entry fee, the Honolulu Marathon is a lengthy 26.2 miles, yet also ranks high in terms of total finishers, making it approachable for beginners. As one of the world’s largest marathons in the nation, this is a great way to close out the year 2020 – pushing forward on one last adventure, one step at a time.
