What to Do at Fossil Creek
Swimming Holes
Summer got you sweating? Cool off with a refreshing swim in one of Fossil Creek’s many swimming holes. For those with children, there is an especially nice spot just steps from the Fossil Creek Bridge. Sun bathe on the rocks to the right of the bridge or think ahead and bring your umbrella for a day in the shade.
The most popular attraction however, is Fossil Creek Waterfall. A two-mile hike in from the parking lot, the waterfall area rewards you with crystal clear water and beautiful views. But beware: the area around the falls is rocky, so remember your water shoes or Tevas to protect your feet.
Hiking
If you want to add even more adventure to your trip to Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic Recreation Area, plan for a hike along the 10-mile roundtrip Flume Trail. You can park near the Irving/Flume Trailhead and then make your way to Old Fossil Creek Dam. For an even greater challenge, try your luck on the Fossil Springs Trail. With a distance of eight miles and a 1,500 foot elevation change, this hike is sure to have your heart pounding.
Wildlife Viewing
While most people flock to Fossil Creek for hiking and swimming, wildlife viewing is also a big draw. Keep an eye out for javelina, or dog-sized pigs, that are plentiful in the area. In addition, plants and wildlife depend on Fossil Creek for habitat, including otters, beavers, leopard frogs, and common black hawks. So, don’t forget your camera, binoculars and birding guide!
